Hi Rick,
Not so long ago you have written an article about the Spamhaus organization, depicting it as activists who fighht against criminal businesses and for freedom of speech (http://rt.com/op-edge/businesses-attack-freedom-speech-spamhaus-133/comments/). I have commented about the conflict between Spamhaus and Cyberbbunker in the Russian media at the time, and stated that I don’t approve of Spamhaus’ methods because I know that in their fight against spam they resort to blackmailing techniques.
Hi Rick,
Not so long ago you have written an article about the Spamhaus organization, depicting it as activists who fighht against criminal businesses and for freedom of speech (http://rt.com/op-edge/businesses-attack-freedom-speech-spamhaus-133/comments/). I have commented about the conflict between Spamhaus and Cyberbbunker in the Russian media at the time, and stated that I don’t approve of Spamhaus’ methods because I know that in their fight against spam they resort to blackmailing techniques.
The Pirate Party of Russia leases a server from the company Hetzner, where our party site, the sites of our projects (rublacklist.net, ruleaks.net, idemocracy.ru) and the personal sites of some of our members are located. We consider it to be dangerous to place our site and projects inside Russia because of the risk of political persecution. We also have a sub-net at Hetzner (5.9.167.80 – 5.9.167.95) where all our sites are located. The lease on the server is done in the name of Alpha LLC belonging to our administrator. Along with 16 IP addresses completely used by our party, there are three blank sub-nets as well.
Without a word of warning, several days ago Spamhaus has added our sub-net and our domain (!) to their spam list, which made me remember your article.
I can vouch for the following:
— Our administrator didn’t receive any complaints from Spamhaus;
— Our server and our sub-net don’t have anything to do with spam.
I believe our administrator that Alpha LLC hasn’t done anythink illegal, in fact, the company does nothing except administering these 16 IP addresses for the party.
On Monday the site of the Pirate Party of Russia was unavailable. Hetzner disabled the server on Spamhaus’ request. Now I have first-hand experience supporting my view about Spamhaus that I have expressed after the Cyberbunker conflict.
So, I wanted to ask you, why are you calling what Spamhaus is doing the protection of free speech? I really dislike spam, and Gmail does a good job of protecting me against spam; but who will protect me and our organization from Spamhaus?
Best regards,
Stanislav,
Vice-chairman, Pirate Party Russia
